Drum Making Workshop
Hosted by Festívalhöll
In connection with Festívalhöll in the Faroe Islands, we have been invited to hold this drum-making workshop. The workshop begins on the Monday following the Viking market at Festívalhöll, allowing participants to attend the market during the weekend beforehand, in a landscape known for its steep cliffs, open ocean, and shifting weather and light.
While direct archaeological finds of Viking-Age drums are rare due to the use of organic materials, there is strong historical and comparative evidence that drums were used in the Nordic world—for ritual work, storytelling, trance, and communal gatherings. Frame drums similar to Sámi drums were likely part of this wider Northern tradition.
During the workshop, you will create your own traditional frame drum from start to finish. We work with hides from Scandinavian animals such as roe deer, red deer, reindeer, moose, and goat, and you will also be introduced to natural dyeing using plants and herbs.
The process is thorough and hands-on. We guide you carefully through each step, but expect full participation—this is real craft, not a shortcut. No previous experience is required.
